Easy Enforcement Targets
Few systems or components on trucks aren't included on some kind of
enforcement checklist, but some are dead giveaways for the CVSA folk, like valid
registrations, current authorities, IFTA decals, etc. Have maintenance staff
crosscheck with the compliance department to ensure all the required
documentation is current - and properly applied. It's a violation to apply
stickers and decals in other than the prescribed location.
In addition to other required emergency equipment, make sure the truck has on
board and in working condition, a fire extinguisher appropriate for the
application securely fastened to the vehicle, but easily accessible to the
driver and to someone on the ground in an emergency (see TMC RP 403A). That
means not buried behind a bunch of oil jugs in the jockey box. If the vehicle
transports hazmat, ensure the device complies with the requirements of the
specific application.
Spare fuses are still required if any of the circuit protection devices are not
resettable circuit breakers. At least one spare fuse or other overload
protective device is required for each kind and size used.
Flares, reflective triangles, or lanterns as deemed appropriate for the
application must also be within easy reach and have the manufacturer's
certification label clearly visible for inspection.
The sleeper equipment must also meet prescribed standards, with an appropriate
mattress and an intact and properly maintained occupant restraint system (even
if the driver leaves it tucked under the mattress).
