East Integrates Stairs Into Flatbeds

East Manufacturing introduced the first built-in stairway for platform trailers, providing an easier, safer exit and entrance to the flatbed deck.

The deck lid locks in the upright position via double rods that slide into two receivers. One handrail is located under the lid, and the other is built next to the pooch-punched aluminum steps.

Mack Offers CARB Idling Solution

Mack MP7 and MP8 engines have been certified to meet California's 2008 criteria to limit emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) while idling. This means Mack customers with compliant engines will not have to shut down their engines after five minutes of idling as otherwise required by California regulations that took effect earlier this year.

Customers now have the option to specify "Idle Emission Certification - CARB '08" for Mack MP Series engines built after January 1, 2008. This feature means the truck's engine has been certified to meet the 30 gram/hour NOx limit. A CARB-required decal affixed to its hood identifies the truck as meeting the regulation. The new Mack MP10 engine will also be able to meet this standard when it goes into production later this year.

Detroit Diesel Offers Free Fuel Economy Upgrade

Detroit Diesel announced that a new software release will soon be available to customers, free of charge, that will enhance the fuel economy of EPA '07 Series 60 engines as much as 2.5 percent.

The company has been able to enhance the regeneration process to improve the fuel efficiency, because testing showed the DPF regeneration process was more effective than originally thought.

In addition to regeneration cycle modifications, Detroit Diesel also announced no-charge features that can significantly enhance the vehicle's shifting and cruise control operations. Both of these features will be made available to customers at no charge at the same time they come in for the regeneration programming.

Volvo Option Meets California Idling Regs

Volvo Trucks North America offers a new feature to help customers meet California's stringent truck idling requirements. Volvo trucks equipped with this feature comply with California regulations, with the benefit of very low nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.

Volvo's family of D11, D13 and D16 engines can be ordered with an optional Low NOx Idle, or LNI, feature. With LNI, Volvo engines are certified to emit 30 grams per hour or less of NOx while idling. California regulations prohibit trucks that do not meet this standard from idling for more than five minutes. Pennsylvania and New Jersey have adopted the requirement and other states are considering it.

Shell Introduces Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40

Shell Lubricants has introduced Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 heavy-duty motor oil, which meets or exceeds API CJ-4 specifications.

The motor oil offers significant improvements in wear protection, soot control, deposit control, heat resistance and protection in extreme climates, according to the company, and can provide enhanced fuel economy compared to conventional 15W-40 motor oils.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 can help improve fuel efficiency up to 1 percent compared to conventional 15W-40 motor oil through decreased friction and by reducing the energy used to pump the motor oil through the engine, according to the company.

Dana Improves Efficiency Of Tandem Lineup

Dana's Commercial Vehicle Systems group has enhanced its lineup of 40,000-pound tandem axles by incorporating its patented OnDemand lube pump option into several models.

The OnDemand pump reduces parasitic losses, reduces weight, lowers operating temperatures, extends and improves lubricant performance, and contributes to reducing overall fuel consumption.

Currently used widely with Dana\'s D170 and D190 series of tandems, the OnDemand pump is now available with heavy duty highway tandem axles, vocational tandem axles, as well as Dana's Torsionally-tuned and High-Performance single-speed, tandem drive axles.

"Our lubrication system is unique in that it operates precisely when needed, only during a spinout situation," says Steve Slesinski, director - global product planning for Dana. "More than 99 percent of the time, the pump avoids engagement during normal vehicle operation." Pumps that operate continuously result in wasted horsepower, higher temperatures in the sump, and reduced lubricant life, he says.

Extended Day Cab Option Offered For C500

Kenworth now offers its Extended Day Cab option for the Kenworth C500 vocational model.

The Kenworth Extended Day Cab enhances driver comfort with an additional 6 inches of length and 5 inches of cab height compared to Kenworth\'s traditional day cab. The Extended Day Cab also offers 2 more inches behind the wheel, additional leg room, up to 21 degrees of recline in the driver\'s seat, and 2 extra cubic feet of storage behind the seat.

New Goodyear Regional Tires

Goodyear now offers the Unisteel G149 RSA RH tire for on-highway regional service and the Unisteel G150 HSA for city or neighborhood driving.

The tread pattern for the G149 RSA RH is "tuned" for longer wear on urban streets and highway driving, while the G150 HSA uses special compounds for high-scrub applications such as local pickup and delivery service.

Both all-position tires, available in 11R22.5 sizes in G and H load ratings, feature circumferential grooves and lateral blades that help displace water for driving on rain-soaked roads.

Peterbilt Offers Model 388 For Car Haulers

Peterbilt introduced a new low profile version of its Model 388 specifically designed for the car carrier industry.

The new Model 388 Low Profile Configuration has been optimized with a lower cab height to allow for an aftermarket installation of an over-the-cab car carrier body to maximize the number of vehicles that may be hauled. The lower cab height gives customers the ability to transport larger vehicles over the cab. It can be specified with a wide variety of drivetrain and suspension options, and can accommodate engines up to 600 horsepower.

Hendrickson Lift Axle For Roll-off Chassis

Hendrickson Auxiliary Axle Systems designed a new lift axle model for Class 8 roll-off vehicles called Composilite RO.

The 13,500-pound-capacity RO fixed-axle model fits flat to the frame for maximum clearance from cylinder beams, attachments and sliding components. Scalloped hangers aid in the clearance around roll-off cylinders.

Hendrickson positioned Composilite RO springs and parallelogram components inside the frame rails, retaining a compact 23.5-inch packing space. Beams are spaced inboard 1 inch for additional clearance, and the air spring plates mount to the inside of the frame rail.

The Composilite RO fixed axle delivers 13 inches of travel and 10 inches of lift and weighs in at 905 pounds.
